जैव प्रौद्योगिकी (Bio-Technology)
जीवों या उनसे प्राप्त पदार्थों का उपयोग करके मनुष्यों के लिए मूल्यवान वस्तुओं का उत्पादन करना तथा जैव-विविधता में संतुलन को बने रहने देना ही जैव-प्रौद्योगिकी कहलाता है।
जीन अभियांत्रिकी (Genetic Engineering)
किसी भी जीव का लक्षण अथवा गुण उसकी आंतरिक जीन संरचना पर निर्भर करता है। प्रत्येक जीव की कोशिका में
आनुवंशिक कार्य DNA के रेखीय हेलिक्स में पाए जाने वाले प्यूरिन एवं पाइरिमिडिन समक्षारकों का रेखीय क्रम "जीन (Gene)" कहलाता है। जीन अभियांत्रिकी जैव प्रौद्योगिकी का ही एक भाग है। जीन अभियांत्रिकी का तात्पर्य वैसी तकनीक
से है, जिसके सहयोग से किसी एक प्रजाति के जीव-जन्तुओं के आनुवांशिक वाहक जीन का प्रत्यारोपण अन्य प्रजाति के जीव जंतुओं में किया जाता है तथा इच्छित गुणों वाले जीन प्राप्त किए जाते हैं। इस प्रौद्योगिकी के तहत एक या एक से अधिक जीनों से युक्त डी.एन.ए को एक कोशिका से निकालकर दूसरी कोशिका के DNA से जोड़ दिया जाता है। इस
तकनीक को Recombinant DNA तकनीक कहते हैं। प्रायः ई-सेल बैक्टीरिया में किसी दूसरे स्त्रोत से प्राप्त जीन को जोड़ा जाता है। जीन अभियांत्रिकी मे जीनों का संलयन, विलोपन, पक्षांतर और प्रत्यारोपण करके जीवों में महत्वपूर्ण सुधार किया जाता है।
जीन अभियांत्रिकी के द्वारा मनुष्य के असाध्य आनुवंशिक रोगों में सुधार लाया जा सकता है। जैसे एड्स, हृदय रोग,हीमोफीलिया, मलेरिया आदि के टीके बनाने में कृषि जीन अभियांत्रिकी के द्वारा उन्नत किस्म की फसलें तैयार की जाती है।पशुपालन में जीन अभियांत्रिकी के द्वारा अच्छे किस्म की पशु प्रजातियाँ तैयार की जा रही है।

Often, genes from another source are added to E-cell bacteria. Gene engineering significantly improves organisms by fusion, deletion, transfer, and transplantation of genes.
Gene engineering can improve human incurable genetic diseases. For the development of vaccines for AIDS, cardiovascular disease, hemophilia, malaria, etc., a wide variety of crops are prepared by agricultural gene engineering. In animal husbandry, good quality animal species are being prepared by gene engineering.
